Type approvalDocumentation for type approval and registration of vehicles in Denmark

Roadcert – certified for the road

Does your vehicle need to be approved and registered in Denmark? I prepare the documentation the Danish authorities require, and I advise manufacturers, importers and bodybuilders through the entire approval process – from the first Data-Certificate to the signed NIV approval, EU type approval or Certificate of Conformity (CoC).

Approval in Denmark – what does your vehicle need?

01 — Denmark

Start with one question: is the vehicle new or used?
In Denmark a vehicle counts as used if it has previously been registered in the EU, is more than 4 years old or has been driven more than 2,000 km. The route to Danish registration then follows from the vehicle's situation.

New vehicle

Complete CoC

Registration directly on the CoC after a check at a vehicle inspection, when the vehicle:

  • has a complete Certificate of Conformity (CoC)
  • is unchanged from the manufacturer's build – or has only minor changes (mass change under 50 kg, required taxi or authority equipment, warning beacons)

Not sure whether the CoC is complete? Ask – it only takes a moment to clarify.

New vehicle

NIV

National individual vehicle approval is required when the vehicle:

  • only has an incomplete CoC – typically a chassis
  • differs more than 50 kg from the CoC
  • has been rebuilt or completed – e.g. body, tail lift, crane, change of vehicle category – or modified so that requirements such as dimensions, underrun protection, brakes, steering, lighting, reversing camera or driver assistance systems are affected

I handle the complete NIV case – more than 100 completed.

Used vehicle

Inspection

Used vehicles are approved at a Danish vehicle inspection (syn), supported by:

  • Data-Certificate (dataerklæring) – cars up to 8 seats and vans up to 3,500 kg not built for the European market or lacking data
  • G-declaration (G-erklæring) – trucks and trailers over 3,500 kg and buses for more than 10 persons, when imported or modified
  • test reports and documentation after a rebuild, power increase or change of vehicle category

I prepare the declarations and documentation the inspection requires.

Expert witness

Technical expert

When there is doubt or disagreement about a vehicle's construction and legality, I act as court-appointed or independent technical expert and give an impartial assessment.

Professional experience in vehicle approval since 1987, and hands-on experience building cars, vans and trucks since 1980. Assessments can be supported by technical calculations or tests.

About

03 — Background

Type approval is the art of making a given vehicle fit a given set of rules – a task with many details and sub-requirements.

I have worked with vehicle approval since 1987.

The name Roadcert stands for road certification: I deliver the declarations, certificates and documentation a vehicle needs before it may be used on the road – from Data-Certificates and G-declarations to NIV and EU type approval.

I am a homologation engineer and have worked with vehicle approval for almost four decades – from handling national type approvals at the Danish Ministry of Justice / Road Traffic Authority, through 16 years as an independent consultant in my own company AutoConsult, to employment with vehicle manufacturers and bodybuilders.

Along the way I have built broad experience in product development, NIV, Data-Certificates and EU type approval as well as testing. As quality manager at VBI Group and VBI Minibus I carried out EU type approvals – including multi-stage approval of converted minibuses – and contributed to establishing a Danish test centre for seat belt anchorages.

I also work with motorcycles, agricultural vehicles and the Machinery Directive where the regulations overlap – and over the years I have been closely involved in the Danish community for modified vehicles, hot rods and tuned cars.
